JUDY COLLINS & LEONARD COHEN - "Suzanne" 1976

JUDY COLLINS & LEONARD COHEN -
"Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" 1976

"Sang it all night"? Cohen, you sly dog!

Judy Collins is net so 'n merkwaardige ou dame.
Judy Collins, now 71, is still writing, performing, and nurturing fresh talent. She plays 80 to100 dates a year around the country. Judy Collins, a relentlessly creative spirit, is a modern day Renaissance woman who is also an accomplished painter, filmmaker, record label head, musical mentor, and an in-demand keynote speaker for mental health and suicide prevention.  She continues to create music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart. Hier is haar webwerf.

Leonard Cohen's 76th Birthday - The Video

Vroër vanjaar is Leonard Cohen ingehuldig by die  Songwriters Hall Of Fame.
Weereens was Judy Collins by.

Tydens die seremonie is hierdie opname gemaak:
LEONARD COHEN GIVES MOVING HALLELUJAH FOR SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME

Longfellow antwoord hul so:
God sent his Singers upon earth
With songs of sadness and of mirth,
That they might touch the hearts of men,
And bring them back to heaven again.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Finale woord.
“We’re so lucky to be alive at the same time Leonard Cohen is”

In Die Middel van ‘n Diep Donker Dam.

Midlake, 'n Jethro Tull geinspireerde groep, het sy ontstaan in 1999 in 'n Texas universiteit gehad. In 2006 het hulle my gemesmeraais met hul juweel "The Trials of Van Occupanther" wat die pragtige "Roscoe" opgelewer het. Hulle het egter sopas hul nuutste album "The Courage of Others " uitgebring.

Midlake - Rulers, ruling all things

Midlake - Acts of Man

The Power of Music

Ek gaan nie probeer slim woorde hierby sit nie.

Lili Marlene

Lili Marleen
Vor der Kaserne
Vor dem großen Tor
Stand eine Laterne
Und steht sie noch davor
So woll'n wir uns da wieder seh'n
Bei der Laterne wollen wir steh'n
Wie einst Lili Marlene.
Wie einst Lili Marlene.

Unsere beide Schatten
Sah'n wie einer aus
Daß wir so lieb uns hatten
Das sah man gleich daraus
Und alle Leute soll'n es seh'n
Wenn wir bei der Laterne steh'n
Wie einst Lili Marlene.
Wie einst Lili Marlene.

Deine Schritte kennt sie,
Deinen schönen Gang
Alle Abend brennt sie,
Doch mich vergaß sie lang
Und sollte mir ein Leids gescheh'n
Wer wird bei der Laterne stehen
Mit dir Lili Marlene?
Mit dir Lili Marlene?

Aus dem stillen Raume,
Aus der Erde Grund
Hebt mich wie im Traume
Dein verliebter Mund
Wenn sich die späten Nebel drehn
Werd' ich bei der Laterne steh'n
Mit dir Lili Marlene.
Mit dir Lili Marlene.

Lili Marlene
In front of the barracks,
In front of the main gate,
Stood a lamppost,
It still stands out front,
We want to see each other there again,
We want to stand by the lamppost,
As before, Lili Marleen,
As before, Lili Marleen.

Our two shadows
Looked like one,
That we held each other so fondly
Someone would think we were one.
And everybody will see it
If we stand by the lamppost,
As before, Lili Marleen,
As before, Lili Marleen.

Already the guard was crying,
“They’re blowing taps.
That could cost you three days.”
“Comrade, I’m coming right away.”
There we said farewell,
But I would rather have gone with you,
With you, Lili Marleen,
With you, Lili Marleen.

She knows your footsteps,
Your special stride.
Every evening she is burning,
Though she forgot me long ago.
And if a mishap should befall me,
Who would stand by the lamppost,
With you, Lili Marleen,
With you, Lili Marleen?

From out of silent space,
From out the lands of Earth,
Your beloved lips uplift me
As if in a dream.
When the nocturnal mists swirl,
I will be standing by the lamppost,
As before, Lili Marleen,
As before, Lili Marleen.

Blind Willie McTell (5 Mei, 1898 – 19 Augustus, 1959)

Willie het by verskillende blinde skole in Georgia skool gegaan, later in New York en Michigan en was 'n bedrewe braile leser.

Bruce Eder- skryf soos volg oor Willie
Blind Willie McTell was one of the giants of the blues, as a guitarist and as a singer and recording artist. Hardly any of his work as passed down to us on record is less than first rate, and this makes most any collection of his music worthwhile. A studious and highly skilled musician whose skills transcended the blues, he was equally adept at ragtime, spirituals, story-songs, hillbilly numbers, and popular tunes, excelling in all of these genres. He could read and write music in braille, which gave him an edge on many of his sighted contemporaries, and was also a brilliant improvisor on the guitar, as is evident from his records. Willie always gave an excellent account of himself, even in his final years of performing and recording.

Searching The Desert For The Blues

You may search the ocean, you might go 'cross the deep blue sea
But Mama, you'll never find another hot shot like me
I followed my baby from the station to the train
And the blues came down like night and showered me
I left her at the station wringing her hands and crying
I told her she had a home, just as long as I had mine
I've got two women, and you can't tell them apart
I've got one in my bossom, and one I got in my heart
The one in my bossom, she's in Tennessee
And the one in my heart, don't even give a darn for me
I used to say a married woman was the sweetest thing that ever been born
But I've changed that thing, you better leave married women alone
Take my advice: let these married women be
'Cause their husbands'll grab you, beat you ragged as a cedar tree
When a woman say she love you 'bout good as she do herself,
I don't pay her no attention, tell that same line to somebody else
I really don't believe no woman in the whole round world do right,
act like an angel in the daytime, mess by the ditch at night
I'm going, pretty mama, please don't break this rule;
that's why I'm searching these deserts for the blues
I'm going, pretty mama, searching these deserts now
That's why I'm walking my baby home anyhow
Lord, oh Lord
Lordy, Lordy, Lord
Oh Lordy Lord
Lord, Lord, Lord
When a woman say she love you 'bout good as she do herself,
I don't pay her no attention, tell that same line to somebody else
Lord, Lord
Lord, Lord, Lord

McTell worked under a variety of names, and with a multitude of partners, including his one time wife Ruthy Kate Williams (who recorded with him under the name Ruby Glaze), and also Buddy Moss and Curley Weaver. McTell cut some of his best songs more than once in his career. Like many bluesmen, he recorded under different names simultaneously, and was even signed to Columbia and Okeh Records, two companies that ended up merged at the end of the 1930s, at the same time under two names. His recording career never gave Willie quite as much success as he had hoped, partly due to the fact that some of his best work appeared during the depths of the Depression. He was uniquely popular in Atlanta, where he continued to live and work throughout most of his career, and, in fact, was the only blues guitarist of any note from the city to remain active in the city until well after World War II.
Willie was well known enough that Library of Congress archivist John Lomax felt compelled to record him in 1940, although during the war, like many other acoustic country bluesmen, his recording career came to a halt. Luckily for Willie and generations of listeners after him, however, there was a brief revival of interest in acoustic country blues after World War II that brought him back into the studio. Amazingly enough, the newly founded Atlantic Records — which was more noted for its recordings of jazz and R&B — took an interest in Willie and cut 15 songs with him in Atlanta during 1949. The one single released from these sessions, however, didn't sell, and most of those recordings remained unheard for more than 20 years after they were made. A year later, however, he was back in the studio, this time with his longtime partner Curley Weaver, cutting songs for the Regal label. None of these records sold especially well, however, and while Willie kept playing to anyone who would listen, the bitter realities of life had finally overtaken him, and he began drinking on a regular basis. He was rediscovered in 1956, just in time to get one more historic session down on tape.
It's your time to worry

Rest in Peace

Willie Joe Duncan

Jimmy beskryf hom in 'n (Living Blues #1, June 1975) onderhoud so:
"...he was doin this old crazy thing, with this one strand of wire, he wasn't lettin' me lose him nowhere; now, how he was catchin' me on that one strand of broom wire I don't know! But he was doing it all right. He could play that string of wire with a bottle, if he didn't do it with his finger he'd do it with a little old piece of leather on his finger or something he'd pick it with. But on that one strand of wire on that board he could find whatever I was playin' on that guitar. Now that was somethin' I sure hated to lose. Yeah, I hated to lose Jody because it just was a crazy old thing".

Table Top Joe aka Michel Petrucciani

Daar was ook 'n 1992 bootleg opname, Alice Demos,  hierop klinkTable Top Joe so!
Die snit se woorde gaan so:
"Well my mama didn't want me
on the day i was born
i was born without a body
i got nothing but scorn
but i always loved music
all i had was my hands
i'd dreamed i'd be famous
and I'd work at the sands"

en verder...

"I had trouble with the pedals
but i had a strong left hand
and i could play stravinsky
on a baby grand"

en verder....

"and the man without a body
proved everyone wrong
i was rich and i was famous
i was where i belonged, yeah"

Nou het ek met 'n ompad by my eintlike onderwep uitgekom :  Michel Petrucciani .

Michel Petrucciani "born without a body" met 'n 'strong left hand' hy het verseker 'proofed everyone wrong' .

In 1976 bring hy 'n Solus Sewe plaat uit "Some Good Advice"/"Screams in my Ears"

“Screams In The Ears”
Offer your sherry to somebody else
I’ve got nothing to say
‘Cept my wife’s in the bedroom with everyone else
But I don’t want to play

Will you stop asking me who I am?
Go and find someone else
To tell your jokes to
What a great party this is

Melanie Safka

Hieroor het sy toe Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) geskryf.

Little sisters of the sun
Lit candles in the rain
Fed the world on oats and raisins
Candles in the rain
To be there was to remember
So lay it down again
Men can live as brothers
Candles in the rain

Seker Melanie se bekenste treffer!

Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull en Melanie Safka word vandag erken as dié vroulike rock ikone.

Lay down lay down, let it all down
Let your white birds smile up at the
Ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down, let it all down
Let your white birds smile up at the
Ones who stand and frown*
We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace
Chorus

So raise the candles high cause if you
Don't we could stay black against the night
Oh raise them higher again and if you
Do we could stay dry against the rain
Chrous

We were so close there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace
Some came to sing, some came to pray
Some came to keep the dark away
So raise the candles high
Cause if you don't we could stay
Black against the sky
Oh oh raise them higher again

And if you do we could stay dry against the rain
Chorus

Grant-Lee Phillips

"Older Now"
Die lied 233 Under the Milky Way het baie lugtyd gekry
"Like Neil Young meeting Marc Bolan in Bob Dylan's recording studio...
recording a Lennon-esque song?"..........................

The Black Heart Procession

Tom Waits For Nobody

Poor Edward

Did you hear the news about Edward?
On the back of his head he had another face
Was it a woman's face or a young girl?
They said to remove it would kill him
So poor Edward was doomed
The face could laugh and cry
It was his devil twin
And at night she spoke to him
Things heard only in hell
But they were impossible to separate
Chained together for life
Finally the bell tolled his doom
He took a suite of rooms
And hung himself and her from the balcony irons
Some still believe he was freed from her
But I knew her too wellI say she drove him to suicide
And took poor Edward to hell
"I don't have a drinking problem ‘cept when I can't get a drink"
My kids are starting to notice I'm a little different from the other dads. "Why don't you have a straight job like everyone else?" they asked me the other day. I told them this story: In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, "Look at me...I'm tall, and I'm straight, and I'm handsome. Look at you...you're all crooked and bent over. No one wants to look at you." And they grew up in that forest together. And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, "Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest." So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper. And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day.

Stevie Nicks - Landslide

Stevie Nicks - Landslide
"But time makes it bolder; children get older
I'm getting older too...."

~Stevie Nicks - Landslide was written the night beforemy dad was operated on at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in 1974.
I realized then that everything could tumble, and when you're in Colorado, and you're surrounded by these incredible mountains, you think avalanche. It meant the whole world could tumble around us and the landslide would bring you down. And a landslide in the snow is like, deadly. And when you're in that kind of a snow-covered, surrounding place, you don't just go out and yell, because the whole mountain could come down on you.

I took my love and I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
And the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky--what is love?
Can the child in my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin'...ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
I don't know.....I don't know...

Well I've been afraid of changin'
Because I've built my life around you
But time makes it bolder; children get older
I'm getting older too....

So, take this love...take it down.
Oh, if you climb a mountain and you turn around
and you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills...
well, the landslide will bring you down;
The landslide will bring you down...

They just build them like they used to.......

Willard Grant Conspiracy

Willard Grant Conspiracy is 'n Amerikaanse groep met net Robert Fisher as permanente lid.
The TransmissionarySix
Kristen Hersh en Eckman ook van The Walkabouts was deel van die Regard The End opname.

is nog voorbeelde van hul musiek.

Mark Oliver Everett's

Mr. E, a.k.a. Hulle ou goed was 'n bietjie grungy vir my smaak maar Mr E en sy Eels se laaste twee albums val so reg innie middel van my kraal.(aldus John Lane)
Heerlike gatskop soulsearching musiek.
......"Goddamn I miss that girl"......
GuyEen Een van die comments onder "That Look You Give That Guy"
.........regular people like you and me can only hope god blesses us with a beard like that....... hie hie.

The rock star and the quantum mechanic By Andrew Thompson
The quest has helped Mark understand his father better
This December sees the release of the feature film The Golden Compass based on Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy. What many of the cinema-goers will not know is that Pullman's clever use of parallel universes relies heavily on the work of an American quantum physicist, Hugh Everett III.
In 1957, this young and brilliant physicist published a paper which used some heavy duty mathematics to predict the existence of parallel universes.
Although the concept of parallel universes seeped into popular culture, it was considered too way-out for mainstream physicists; and for many years, it remained in the scientific wilderness.
Now, 50 years on, Hugh Everett's son has travelled across America for a BBC Four documentary to find out more about his father's theory, and why it has now been accepted by many physicists as the work of a scientific genius.
He is the first to admit that he can barely add up a restaurant tip and knows virtually nothing about quantum physics
Mark Oliver Everett's own career path couldn't have been more different from that of his father.
Mark Everett is the creative force behind the successful American cult rock band Eels. He is the first to admit that he can barely add up a restaurant tip and knows virtually nothing about quantum physics.
The splitting universe
But the main reason Mark decided to participate in the documentary was that he has always felt estranged from his father, and this would be an opportunity to understand his father better.
Along the way, Mark meets many of his father's old colleagues and also younger physicists who have been inspired by Hugh Everett's work.
The subject matter of parallel universes is hard to grasp
Mark receives a crash course in the history of quantum mechanics and also why Hugh's theory was so revolutionary. In his key paper, Hugh Everett argued that at the quantum level the universe is constantly splitting; and every time it splits a new universe is born.

It sounds bizarre to the layman but for Professor Max Tegmark, physicist at MIT, it makes good sense. In the BBC documentary he enthuses to Mark Everett: "In my personal opinion, your dad's theory is one of the most important discoveries of all time in science; and I can't emphasise that enough - how important I think it is.

"And I would put it right up there with Einstein's relativity theory, Newton's theory of gravity. And I think 50 years from now, he is going to be even more famous than he is now, when more experiments have been confirmed that this seems to be the way that the world works."

But just as importantly, Mark begins to understand why he was so estranged from his father. And it is all to do with scientific egos.

Voice from the past
Essentially, Hugh attempted to upstage the godfather of quantum physics, Niels Bohr. Bohr was the author of the established theory of the time (known as the Copenhagen Interpretation) and refused to accept the work of Hugh Everett.
This was a devastating blow to Hugh Everett who left academia at the time and was always upset by the fact that his scientific theory was not taken more seriously until shortly before his early death in 1982.
Mark helped the BBC search through his father's archives
One of the highlights of the documentary is the discovery of some audio tapes by Mark Everett. They are the only known voice recording of his father (there is no known film footage) and Hugh Everett talks about how he first came up with his theory as a young student at Princeton.
The tapes were believed lost so they are an important finding for the history of science. For Mark it was also the personal opportunity to hear his father's voice after a 25-year void.
Hugh Everett III died of a heart attack in his home in 1982. It was Mark who found the body.
"My father never, ever said anything to me about his theories. I was in the same house with him for at least 18 years but he was a total stranger to me.
"He was in his own parallel universe. He was a physical presence, like the furniture, sitting there jotting down crazy notations at the dining room table night after night. I think he was deeply disappointed that he knew he was a genius but the rest of the world didn't know it."
By participating in the documentary, Mark has finally made peace with his father.
Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives is broadcast on BBC Four on Monday, 26 November, 2007, at 2100 GMT
